The Greek digital-earth Center of Excellence for the Geographical Education was found in 08/6/2012 after the approval of the evaluation committee of the digital-earth.eu Centre of Excellence of the European Program Digital-earth (Comenius Network project). Nikos Labrinos, which is responsible for the operation of the Center, is an associate professor in the Faculty of Primary Education of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, with his fellow worker Katerina Klonari, who is an assistant professor in the Department of Geography of the University of Aegean.

 

The Center has registered offices in the Faculty of Primary Education in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. An annex of the Center is operating in the Department of Geography of the University of Aegean in the island of Lesvos. The Center has a relation with both Universities and this provides him with a free access to a large network of Greek and foreign libraries and to a big number of scientific publications and magazines. The Center operates with the aid of volunteers who staff the other departments of the Center.
The staff is composed by primary and secondary school teachers, PhD Students, postgraduate students, and students of the Faculty of Primary Education of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki or the Department of Geography of the University of Aegean or other Greek Universities.

Purpose of the Center

a) To participate and cooperate with other Centers of Excellence through digital-earth.eu.
b) To promote the ideas of the network and contribute to the incorporation of digital geography in the Geography Curricula in the compulsory levels of education.
c) To provide career advice to its members.
d) To construct, to diffuse and adjust digital tools that are helping on improving the teaching of Geography in education.
e) As a scientific Center, to support the necessities of the teachers in European level structuring /designing products and providing essential services for the educators on active service.
f) To constitute the union through the Centers of Expertise.
g) To function as an association between independent Centers of Expertise.
h) To develop a support system for the Centers of Expertise.
i) To offer services in connection with its interests, to everyone who would ask.
j) To train the educators who are interested in techniques that are used from the digital technology in geography.

Aims of the Centre
1. to lay emphasis on the results of the project digital-earth.eu.
2. to be an equal member of the CoE network .
3. to help at promoting the aims of digital geography within educational system and at spreading the results coming from its usage.
4. to contribute to keeping digital geography education and improving it at all levels.
5. to pursue the presence of digital geography into curricula and its emergence.
6. to work for the convenience of its members in their professional pursuits .

4. Scientific and educational associations of various disciplines
5. Centres of Educational Research
6. Decision-making centres for education
7. Anyone who can ask for its scientific help

Structure of the Center

The center is organized in the following departments: The goals of each department is part of the general goals of the Center. Each department will have a coordinator that will be responsible for the monitoring and guidance of the rest of the members.
The coordinators of the departments will form the steering committee.
The departments are:
1. Department of Digital Technology
2. Department of Development and Teaching Applications
3. Department of Translations
4. Department of Public Relations and Memberships
5. Department of Publications

Departments A, B and C can support teachers in Greece and abroad for the creation, promotion and implementation of digital educational material and teaching methods. More specifically department C is responsible for the translation from English to Greek and vice versa of important texts in order to disseminate to the educational community.
Department D is responsible for the contacts and communication on collaborations and actions of the Center with Greek and International Universities, with Research Institutes and Institutes of Education, with Regional Directorates of Education and the Ministry of Education. Moreover the department is responsible for the communication with its Members. In addition, it is in charge of the archiving of the Members of the Center in collaboration with the department of Digital Technology. Eligible members are individuals and organizations in the private and public sector that are involved in teaching Geography. Finally department D will search for funding from national, European and International grants and new proposals for research.

Department E is responsible for all the publications of the Center in hard copy or in digital format.

The departments have already been stuffed with teachers that have volunteered to work beyond their working hours.

Networking and Partnership
The Centre will be an opportunity to develop a network that will involve people with different career orientation, but with common interests. In addition, it will enable collaboration between people in different countries of Europe to serve the aims of geographical education. It will be an area of communication with teachers who work in schools abroad and it will support them in their work.
There have already been initial agreements for future cooperation between the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas / Information Technologies Institute and EaRSEL (European Association of Remote Sensing Laboratories) Education Department.

Actions
Informative meetings
Informative meetings will be called by the Center where all its members as well as everyone who is interested are invited to attend them. These meetings will be about a) problems concerning the application of digital geography in schools and how they can be dealt with, b) initiatives taken by the Center and c) worldwide actions and initiatives through international co-operations.

Workshops
Workshops will be organized at both national and international level. The workshops will be about skills development with the aid of digital tools which will have been created by the members of the Center or by the members of other European CoE. For those participants who could not be able to be present at the workshops they can take part through teleconference too.

Research – Collaborations – Publications
The collection of educational material, the data bases and also the existing technology and expertise will offer to the members of the Center the chance to publish any project done by the Center in both Greek and international magazines, to propose for research and educational projects (Greek and European) and also to cooperate with other Centers abroad.

Seminars
Since its foundation the Center is trying to participate in both national and international seminars aiming at the promotion of its works and improvement and the consolidation of the geography teaching with technological means. Additionally it aims at organizing an annual or biannual seminar on Digital Geographical Education as well as local seminars and workshops.
